This program was developed as a three hour workshop at the request of a Business Centre, but it is a Stress Control program everyone can use. It is based on the science of physics, rather than psychology, and may therefore be easier to understand. It is how I, as a retired Scientist and Therapist, understand the physics of energy and consciousness, and how it applies to emotion and stress and its action on the body and mind.
Stress is the root cause of a great many medical and psychological problems, either creating them or exacerbating them. Strokes, heart attacks, blood pressure, blocking and hardening of the arteries, cancer, depression, skin problems, obesity, phobias and addictions, memory and learning difficulties, and a host of other problems, including all the side effects that follow in the train of these disorders.
Recently – December 2005 – the Garvan Institute of Medical Research in Sydney announced that it had discovered for the first time the link between stress and disease. Stress releases a hormone that affects the brain and undermines the immune system, inhibiting the bodies ability to hunt down and destroy pathogens such as bacteria and viruses. As Associate Professor, Herbert Herzog said, ‘Our research is relevant to everyone because there is no escaping stress – be it in the workplace or at home.’
Professor Murray Esler of the Baker Research Institute has reported that recent work confirms that stress now leap-frogs it’s way right up the problem ladder and joins the league of major serious disorders.
To make it easy to follow I’ve divided this e-book into three parts:
Firstly how our bodies and minds function in concert, for better or worse, and how this generates stress. And what that stress can do to us. This explanation does not use deep psychological terms, but simple science using analogies and examples from every day experience.
Secondly, the situations that we often find ourselves in that generate stress, and some antidotes. As Professor Herzog says, there is no escaping stress. So how do we recognize those situations which create stress, and how do we avoid them, if possible, or reduce their impact on our health and efficiency?
Lastly, what we can do to avoid, reduce, or overcome stress – particularly serious or chronic stress. None of us can escape some serious stresses, because they are part of living. So in this section we provide two do-it-yourself programs that are based on professional therapy, but explained in a simple way, and structured so that you can do it yourself in the privacy of your own home.
Appendix, This is a special step-by-step guide on how to induce self-hypnosis and use it for therapeutic purposes.
